English Abstracts 165 The Influence of Asia-Pacific War on the Development of U.S. Marine Corps : Focusing on the Experience of Amphibious Warfares Kim, Myongsob ‧ Choi, Jung Joon Key Words U.S. Marine Corps, Asia-Pacific War, the Second World War, War Plan Orange, Amphibious Warfare This paper is analyzing the impace of the Asia-Pacific War on the development of U.S. Marines Corps focusing on their experiences of amphibious operation during the war. After the First World War, U.S. had prepared War Plan Orange against the potential threat of Japan in the Pacific. Even though the U.S. Marine Corps developed the amphibious warfare doctrine and special equipments, U.S. was not well prepared to the amphibious war before the Asia-Pacific War. Through the Asia-Pacific War, the U.S. Marine Corps did 18 times of amphibious assaults to the shore occupied by Japanese. Every time when the U.S. Marine Corps had completed the amphibious operations, they tried to revise the amphibious assault's skill and know-how which they experienced. The results of Asia-Pacific War that influenced to the development of U.S. Marine Corps were as follow. Firstly, it promoted the development of amphibious warfare doctrine and special equipment such as amtrac, LCP, LVTs, LCVP, etc. Secondly, it changed the structure of U.S. Marine Corps that easily adaptable to perform amphibious warfare. Today's structure of U.S. Marine Corps is very similar to 50 years ago which can deploy swiftly and take action any time and any where. Thirdly, it affected to establish the substantial education and training system of the U.S. Marine Corps. During the war, the training facilities were improved and the recruits were trained various depots. The development of various education system concurrently prompted the development of amphibious warfare doctrine.
