The late Park Hang-Rae(1861~1919) was born in YongAm. SangSa-Myeon, in Suncheon City. When the nation of Korea was crying out for independence from Japan. on April 7th of 1919. during the Suncheon outdoor market. Park Hang-Rae himself stood up on the bridge crossing over the Ok-cheon Stream and relentlessly cried out: "Hurray for the independence of the Great Korea!" While he was crying out for Korea's independence, Japanese soldiers cruelly dragged him to prison. The Japanese government sentenced him to ten months in prison, and he died, at the age of fifty-0eight, after serving only seven months in prison because of cruel torture by Japanese police. In 1991, He was awarded for Korea's Medal of National Foundation and his remains were buried at the National Cemetery, Hyun-Choongwon. His sacrifices and patriotism for our country should be commeded and remembered forever by ail of us.
