[영문] Tunnel fortifications of Imperial Japan on Seoubong Peak, Jeju(Registered Cultural Heritage No.309, Built around 1945) Towards the end of the Pacific War, the Japanese developed a special kamikaze-style bomb, designed to be loaded on planes and torpedo boats, in an effort to turn the tide in their favor. The bombs were deployed in five places on Jejudo Island, including Seoubong Peak, Suwolbong Peak, Songaksan Mountain, Sammaebong Peak, and Ilchulbong Peak. At Seoubong Peak, the Japanese built eighteen tunnel fortifications and two bunkers along the coastal cliff. The tunnel fortifications are about 340 meters long in total. The largest fortification, located halfway up the peak, is about 100 meters long and is shaped like the character “ __ ” . The remains of these facilities are a valuable heritage that shed light on the Japanese strategy to defend Jejudo Island against the Allied Forces.
