Around the time of the erection of Dr. Hyun Bong-hak Statue In the middle of atragic fratricidal Korean War, Dr. Hyun Bong-hak (1922-2007) was a hero who safeguarded the human dignity and freedom by saving more than 92,000 civilian refugees in the Hungnam Evacuation, the largest civilian rescue in human history. Dr. Hyun graduated from Severance Union Medical College (now Yonsei University College of Medicine) and went to the U.S. to study clinical pathology. When he was a professor at the alma mater, the Korean War broke out in which he served as a civil affairs officer to Lieutenant General Almond, commander of the U.S. X Corps. Moved by persuasion of Dr. Hyun and Colonel Forney, Lieutenant General Almond ordered the civilian refugees instead of military supplies to be embarked on the ship, bringing Christmas miracle of 1950. Yonsei University, Dr. Hyun bong-hak Commemorative Group, Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, Korea Marine Corps and many others have come together to commemorate Dr. Hyun's spirit of love towards humanity and erect the statue here.
