Abstract - 145 - Currently, DMZ tourism mainly focuses on trips to Panmunjeom, whereas travel agencies specializing in DMZ tourism sell daily travel products mainly to foreigners. Travel products for Koreans, however, focus on school excursions or students' field trips as part of national security learning experiences. Only an extremely small number of DMZ travel products in Gangwon are currently sold via travel agencies because DMZ tourism resources in Gangwon are scattered too widely. Moreover, the lack of easy access from Seoul Metropolitan area to these tourism destinations and the absence of tourism infrastructure in DMZ regions make it difficult for travel agencies to design and sell travel-related products. Recently, there has been a decreasing number of national security-oriented tourists such as those from school excursions or field trips to DMZ as a national security tourism destination. The trips are centered on the observation center and a field trip program to tunnels dug by North Korea u nder the DMZ, whereas early stages of ecological trip programs-Field Trip to Dotayeon, Yanggu, and Migrating Bird Watching Program in Cheolwon-are being offered. Based on the result of interviews with residents and tourists around DMZ, which aimed at closely determining the present status of DMZ tourism in Gangwon, the study extracted the following basic directions to which plans to promote DMZ tourism in Gangwon should take: globalization of DMZ tourism by consolidating the symbolic significance of DMZ, the only Cold War relic left in the world, discovery of stories for diverse tourism resources located in the wide area of DMZ and training tourist guides who can deliver these stories, development of differentiated tourism programs of five districts located near the border in order to link these tourism resources to residents' income, and creating resources for tourism from military units through the establishment of a close network with them. The following are plans to promote DMZ tourism in Gangwon based on these directions:
