It is also the story of the rise of American wealth and society, whose ideal of luxury was shaped by one man, Charles Lewis Tifany (1812–1902). Tis visionary merchant was 25 years old when he started a sta- tionery and fancy goods store at 259 Broadway in New York City on September 14, 1837. Charles Tifany embraced the philosophy “ good design is good business,” and would soon discover publicity was good for business, too. With the fall of Louis Philippe’s regime in the 1840s, French aris- tocrats feeing the political turmoil were eager to exchange their diamonds for cash. Charles Tifany saw a golden buying opportu- nity and risked the profts of his fedgling enterprise on a cache of splendid diamonds, marking the frst appearance of major gem- stones in the U.S. Te press took note and crowned Charles Tifany “King of Diamonds.” Tereafer, Tifany took its place as the great- est of America’s jewelers. In 1886, Tifany introduced the engagement ring as we know it to- day. Previously, diamond rings were set in bezels. But Mr. Tifany’s ring was designed to highlight brilliant-cut diamonds by lifing the stone of the band into the light. Tis famous ring was named the Tifany® Setting.
