Te 2014 season brings together golden masterpieces, modern classics, and a few surprises to life with some of the fnest conductors on the podium today combining with the unique passion and intensity of our Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra. *All the above programs, performers and schedules are subject to change depending on circumstances. s p o 2014 season highlighTs r. strauss Myung-Whun Chung Richard Georg Strauss “Ein Heldenleben (A Hero’s Life)” Commemorating 150th anniversary of the birth of Richard Georg Strauss, Maestro Myung-Whun Chung and SPO will present the masterpiece with a grand-scale orchestration featuring four winds, eight horns, two harps, percussions and a horn solo. shostaKovich Eliahu Inbal Soloist: Isang Enders (Cello) Ernest Bloch’s Schelomo / Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 11 Te Israeli conductor is best known for the complete cycles of Mahler and Shostakovich, makes his Seoul Philharmonic debut in a program of colorful orchestral showpieces based on historic and legendary events. Korean- German cellist, Isang Enders also makes his Seoul Philharmonic debut with Ernest Bloch’s Schelomo, Hebrew Rhapsody for Cello and Orchestra. mahler Myung-Whun Chung Gustav Mahler Symphony No. 5 Maestro Myung-Whun Chung, whose Deutsche Grammophon recording of Mahler Symphony Nos. 1 & 2 has received world-wide accolades. Mahler wrote that “a Symphony must be like the world. It must contain everything.” Maestro Chung’s world renowned interpretation of Mahler reveals this complete musical world. Te opening trumpet solo from the frst movement is perhaps one of the most famous orchestral works for the instrument. brucKner anD bartoK Stephane Deneve Soloist: Piotr Anderszewski (Piano) Prokofev’s Te Love for Tree Oranges, Suite Bartók’s Piano Concerto No. 3 Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4 French Maestro Stéphane Denève, brings Bruckner’s most popular symphony, subtitled the Romantic, to Seoul. Bartok’s best loved piano concerto has a more direct connection with the folk traditions of his native Hungary. Pianist Piotr Anderszewski makes his Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra debut. beethoven Myung-Whun Chung Every orchestra in the world has its special traditions: the SPO is proud to ofer Beethoven’s fnal symphony, his Ode to Joy, every December with top Korean soloists. Tis is an annual event that you will not want to miss. Last season, Maestro Chung recorded this iconic work for Deutsche Grammophon so that you can enjoy his performance throughout the year.
