403 the tomb to enshrine the soul. Donggwang-ri was set on fire by soldiers from the 9th Regiment of The Korean Constabulary on November 21, 1948 as part of the Scorched-earth operation. They entered the village and killed Villagers they regarded as ‘rioters’. The survivors escaped to nearby ‘Keun Neob Gwa’(Big Cave). However, the cave was soon Discovered and the villagers escaped by trudging 20 kilometers through knee-deep snow to ‘Bolle Oreum’ near Yeongshil, Mount Hall. However, most of them were arrested by soldiers who chased the villagers’ footprints through the snow. The villagers were sent to the concentration camp in Seogwipo and killed at Jeongbang Falls on January 22, 1949. Approximately 40 residents of Donggwang-ri were killed there and their bodies were thrown into the sea. However, the bereaved family members couldn’t claim the corpses for fear of the soldiers. after several years, some bereaved family members made claim to their deceased family members at Jeongbang Falls and made the ‘Fake Tomb’ in Donggwang-ri to enshrine their souls.
