Ora-ri suffered great loss from the onset of the April 3rd Incident. Two of the six shot dead during the March 1st Firing Incident that took place at Gwandeokjeong Pavilion in 1947 were from Ora-ri. Civilian deaths or abduction by armed civilian groups and the government police continued in April 1948. On April 28, Colonel Kim Ik-ryeol, commander of the 9th Regiment in charge of Jeju and Kim Dal-Sam, commander of the armed civilian groups, held a peace negotiation for termination of the battle within 72 hours. However, the USA Army Military Government turned to take a hard line approach with the “Ora-ri(Yeon-mi Village) arson incident” on May 1st. A US Army video recording team filmed the incident on the ground and from the air. This video, titles “May Day on Cheju-do,” is the only remaining video record showing the early days of the April 3rd Incident in Jeju. More than 240 Ora-dong residents overall lost their lives during the Jeju April 3rd incident, and several villages including Eouneul, Haesani, Gojire and Seondal-baengdui were left in ruins.
