Abstract - 143 - Abstract A Policy Measures for Improving DMZ Tourism in Gangwon(SUMMARY) Since the 1990s, Gangwon has been developing old war zones, battlefields and ruins in the DMZ region (within the region and outlying areas) that had been neglected since the Korean War as tourist spots made on the theme of national security. Serving as educational places for visitors to learn history and recognize the disaster of wars, these tourism destinations have contributed to the improvement of the local economy in the nation's borders. However, the recent atmosphere of reconciliation between South and North Korea and the extension of the Mt. Geumgang tourism have formed a sense of rejection to national security-oriented tourism among Koreans, resulting in a rapid decrease in the number of tourists. Therefore, it has been proposed that rather than continue maintaining existing tourism destination that feature simple battlefields on the theme of national security, all tangible and intangible resources related to the formation of DMZ, an important post-Cold War relic, should be transformed into tourism resources. For this reason, we first determined the value and possibilitie s with the use of DMZ as a tourism resource by conducting research on the literature. Then the present situation and trends in DMZ tourism resources in Gangwon were analyzed through a field research, statistic analyses, interviews with travel agencies, and a survey on local residents' and tourists' perception regarding DMZ as a tourism resource. Based on the results of the said research studies, we drafted plans to promote tourism in the DMZ and attempted to popularize
